The Suffolk First Citizen Award is the city’s most prestigious civic honor, presented annually to an individual whose leadership, service, and commitment to community have made a lasting impact on the lives of others. Since its founding in 1956, the award has recognized residents who exemplify the highest ideals of citizenship and who work—often quietly and without recognition—to make Suffolk a stronger, more compassionate place to live.
Originally established by the Suffolk Cosmopolitan Club, the award was revived in 2003 by the Rotary Club of Suffolk following a brief hiatus. Today, the Suffolk First Citizen Award is jointly presented by the Rotary Club of Suffolk and the North Suffolk Rotary Club, continuing a proud tradition of honoring those who embody Rotary’s motto: “Service Above Self.”
Nominees are selected based on their record of civic engagement, personal integrity, and meaningful contributions to the community. Honorees come from all walks of life—business, education, healthcare, government, the arts, faith communities, and beyond—but each shares a deep commitment to making a difference.
The recipient is chosen by a rotating selection committee comprised of Suffolk and North Suffolk Rotary Club members and respected community leaders. The committee is committed to preserving the award’s integrity by ensuring a thoughtful, independent review of all nominations each year. The spokesperson for the committee is local businessman and past First Citizen honoree Billy Chorey, whose own legacy of service exemplifies the spirit of the award.
The Suffolk First Citizen Award not only celebrates individual achievement, but also serves as a reminder of the power of service, the importance of community leadership, and the enduring legacy of those who give generously of their time and talents. The annual Suffolk First Citizen ceremony brings together residents, leaders, and supporters to honor the recipient and to inspire others to lead with purpose and serve with heart.
